Tulsi: A True Skin Cleanser
By Sanjana Antony

Since the olden days, proper skincare has been a priority for people who see it as an essential element of ones daily routine. Often, Mother Nature has all the essential nutrients needed to provide nourishment for the skin. Ancient treatments used various natural herbs for providing facial skincare. The advantage with the natural herbs is that they always have fewer side effects than their chemical counterparts do. Tulsi is one of these natural herbs. It is found in India and is believed to be a sacred plant by the Hindus.

Ayurveda uses tulsi extensively both externally and internally. Taken internally, tulsi leaves have a strong pungent taste and are capable of curing many ailments. Apart from acting as medicine for various internal problems pertaining to vata and kappa doshas, tulsi is also used in skincare solutions. Tulsi is an antiseptic and anti-parasitic. This property is used in treating various wounds on the skin. All the cuts and wounds can be treated with tulsi paste, an Ayurvedic treatment that contains extracts of tulsi. When squeezing tulsi leaves, the juice released can be applied directly on wounds.

Tulsi is extremely good for those who have dry skin. Natural skincare for dry skin utilizes the power of tulsi and hence Ayurvedic skincare solutions for oily skin contain tulsi extracts. As it can cure the wounds and cuts, tulsi can be used even for chapped skin. Tulsi is not generally used as is; a combination of sandalwood oil, tulsi and other herbal products are used as Ayurvedic skincare treatments.

Tulsi has antioxidant properties that can fight aging. Hence, tulsi juice can be applied on face to reduce the age spots and wrinkles. While the contemporary medicines advertise creams that can give immediate effects, using tulsi regularly can effectively reduce wrinkles while nourishing skin. Generally, people with dry skin develop cracks and tulsi along with other herbal products act as an effective moisturizer moisturizing the skin.

Tulsi can also be used in exfoliating skincare solution where the dead cells are actively removed. This treatment stimulates blood circulation, new cells will be produced faster, and you can see a natural glow. Tulsi can be used for different skin types by combining it with different Ayurvedic herbs. A facial mask that contains tulsi will rejuvenate the face and you can have better skin when you use tulsi regularly. The popular skincare brands and soaps in the market contain tulsi. It can also be used in curing acne, as tulsi is an anti septic. Rather than applying the juice of tulsi directly, mixing tulsi with other soothing powders will give you better results.
