Fuller’s
earth is naturally occurring sedimentary clay used in
cosmetics and skincare products by women living in the
southeastern parts of Europe. Its typical mineral content
includes silica, alumina, lime, sapphire crystal, magnesium
oxide, iron oxide, and calcium oxide. While the proportion
of minerals varies and determines the color of the clay,
all Fuller’s earth – white, green, blue,
and yellow - are renowned for their ability to soak
up oil. When applied on oily and acne-prone skin, many
feel that fuller’s earth facial masks outperform
any other cleansing skincare products.
Fuller’s earth facial masks reduce oil and remove
impurities from skin, and as such, are highly recommended
for people with acne problems, spots, and blemishes.
The clay is also said to produce a lightening effect
on the epidermal layer of skin by removing excessive
skin impurities, dead epidermal cells. Combined with
yoghurt, Fuller’s earth has a literally bleaching
effect on skin. When used twice daily - morning and
evening - on a wet face in the form of facial scrub
paste, Fuller’s earth aids in maintaining the
healthy oil balance of acne prone skin. There are no
restrictions as to frequency of use; Fuller’s
earth is completely natural.
Being a traditional facial and body skincare product
in southeastern Europe for centuries on end, Fuller’s
earth has proven a completely safe and effective skincare
product. In Bulgaria, it is often combined with lemon
juice, yoghurt, and/or rose water to form a thick paste
that is applied on face and body, and allowed to dry.
It is then rinsed off with water or herbal teas. Traditionally,
in southeastern European women’s beauty regimes,
Fuller’s earth has also been used for fighting
hair loss. It is a base for homemade soaps and paraben-free
shampoos. For better effects, apple vinegar and egg
yolk are added to this marvelous clay shampoo prior
to application. The regular application of Fuller’s
earth in hair care gives hair thickness, volume, and
shine. Applied regularly as hair mask, it is said to
increase hair growth.
Fuller’s earth reportedly effectively fights
stubborn hair conditions like dandruff and seborrhea.
Its natural property to absorb excessive impurities
from scalp skin is used in natural anti-dandruff hair
care masks. Fuller’s earth is most frequently
combined with sulphur for a better anti-dandruff effect.
Washing hair alternately with Fuller’s earth soap
and pine tar soap is another effective hair care solution
with a particularly powerful anti-dandruff effect. People
with acne-prone skin would benefit most from every day
facial masks containing Fuller’s earth as a main
ingredient. Combined with whipped egg white, Fuller’s
earth provides an anti-inflammatory and astringent effect
to damaged skin tissues. It can be used as every day
facial cleanser or can be combined with chestnut bran
for better peeling effect.
