The Origin and The Conception
April 14th, 2010Quench is, as my mother will tell you, my baby. Frankly, Quench has provided me with a sense of identity, direction and purpose, and after years as a young professional climbing the ostensible “ladder” in the world of finance, I needed that. Prior to Quench, my world was consumed with my “day job” and not much else. In a perfect world, I guessed that I’d make boatloads of money, travel the globe, learn about different cultures and meet interesting people. Then, with all my money and culture, I’d give back by helping those in need, to help themselves. Growing up in a household with loose ties to Hinduism, I’ve always fundamentally understood the karmic circle and believed in the basic principle that the more you give, the more you get, but I digress… Fast forward to the day I turned thirty-one, and decided I’d had enough; I quit my job, took a consulting position that allowed me the freedom to dictate my own hours without detrimentally effecting my income, and began to focus on a hobby that I had taken up a few years earlier as a form of stress release–soapmaking.
Soapmaking came naturally to me. From a very early age, I would watch my mother whip up various concoctions for her hair and skin. As a child, I would attempt to emulate my beautiful mother by spending hours creating “beauty” treatments composed of whatever I could get my little hands on. I realized, however, that my mother’s formulas, unlike my own, were never particularly complicated. The ingredients were often exotic to our friends and neighbors; however, turmeric, ginger, plain homemade yogurt, and coconut oil were staples in our home. Over the years, my mother shared with me her arsenal of beauty “secrets,” which she learned from my grandmother growing up in India. As a result, by the time I found soapmaking, I had already been whipping up my own personal “line” of beauty products for years. It was then that it occurred to me that if my mom had this wealth of knowledge passed down from my grandmother, wouldn’t mothers and grandmothers from all over the world possess the same knowledge? If that was true, then I could parlay these secrets from all over the world into something that I was really passionate about. And that, boys and girls, is how Quench was conceived.
Today, and Quench Bath & Body from Around the World, in its current form, has been a “real” company for about three years. While it went through several iterations before reaching its current form, all were necessary steps that taught me more than any MBA in entrepreneurship could. In coming posts, I’ll share with you the traps I’ve fallen into, the lessons I’ve learned, and the various peaks and valleys that we continue to face as a relatively new entrant into the heavily saturated world of natural bath and body products.
